Vegetarian and Plant-Based Dining in Oxfordshire

There was a time when vegetarian dining in an Oxfordshire pub meant a mushroom risotto or a goat's cheese tart that had clearly been on the menu since 2006. That time has passed. The county's better kitchens now treat vegetable-led cooking as an opportunity rather than an afterthought, and several are doing it exceptionally well.

How We Approach It at The Old Crown

At The Ballroom Restaurant, our menu changes every six to eight weeks, and there are always multiple vegetarian dishes that receive the same attention as everything else on the menu. We do not have a separate 'vegetarian section': the dishes sit alongside the rest because they deserve to. Our kitchen works with local growers and suppliers across Oxfordshire, and the seasonal approach means the vegetable dishes are genuinely led by what is at its best right now, not by what can be sourced cheaply year-round.

We are always happy to accommodate vegan guests as well. If you let us know when you book, the kitchen can prepare dishes specifically, rather than simply removing elements from existing plates. The same applies to other dietary requirements. Call us on 01367 242744 or mention it in your OpenTable reservation notes.

What Seasonal Actually Means Here

In practical terms, a spring menu might feature English asparagus with a poached egg and hollandaise, or a wild garlic risotto using grain from a Berkshire farm. Summer brings heritage tomatoes, courgette flowers, and broad beans. Autumn is squash, beetroot, and mushrooms foraged from local woodland. Winter is root vegetables, brassicas, and hearty dishes built around what the cold months do best.

This is not health food. This is food that happens to be vegetarian, cooked with the same techniques and care as everything else on a 2 AA Rosette menu. If you are used to vegetarian options being the least interesting thing on a pub menu, you may be pleasantly surprised.

The Pub at The Crown

If you want something more relaxed than The Ballroom, The Pub at The Crown offers a more casual menu that also includes strong vegetarian options. The setting is a proper traditional pub with exposed beams, an open fire, and candle-lit tables. It is the kind of place where you can have a very good meal without feeling like you are 'going out for dinner'.

Other Oxfordshire Options Worth Knowing

The Magdalen Arms in Oxford does exceptional seasonal cooking with a daily-changing menu that always includes serious vegetarian dishes. The Gardener's Arms in Oxford is a dedicated vegetarian pub, one of very few in the country, and worth visiting for the novelty alone even if the food were not good (it is). Further afield, Daylesford Farm near Kingham has an organic farm shop and cafe with a strong plant-based offering, though the prices reflect the Cotswolds postcode.
